The common name stavesacre come from the Ancient Greek name mentioned by Dioscorides (staphis agria, “wild raisin”). A traditional herb to kill lice, common name Lice-bain.
When giving the remedy I often give it with the statement MAKES ANGER APPROPRIATE. The reaction to the remedy doesn’t have to be an angry outburst, in fact rarely is that the reaction.
This remedy state develops out of an abusive situation. Possibly sexual abuse but from any situation that doesn’t allow the individual to express themselves. They don’t have the power (or permission) to fight back, even when they are right.
The idea contained in this remedy is that of living under an unjust master. Ghandi, the leader of the opposition to British Rule, believed cooperation with the British Empire during wartime would lead to self-rule in India. However, after the 1919 Amritsar Massacre, at the holy Golden Temple, and broken political promises, he transformed the Indian National Congress into a mass movement demanding self-rule.
He used a campaign of civil disobedience. Violence toward the British would not have helped. This approach shows the need in STAPHYSAGRIA clients to know the rules. SUPPRESSION OF EMOTIONS particularly in romantic relationships. These people are highly excitable. Thinks about her lover all day, turns over her last encounters in her mind before falling asleep and imagines future possibilities. Her problems lie in the reality of the relationship; she can be easily satisfied by a platonic relationship. This would be more so if there was a history of abuse.
These are “nice” people. They need to know the rules. They need to know how they should act so as not to upset the other person. When all this fails in the relationship they suffer grief. There is a kind of “sweetness” in the face of grief, which differentiates it from the bitterness of IGN and NUX-V. Grief in IGN and NAT-MUR is from loss of loved ones, in AUR in relation to business loss or financial loss and leads to suicide by jumping from a high building, in PLATINA it is loss of social position. In STAPH it will be dependant on romantic or relationship disappointments.
They get diarrhea, increased urination and tumors after grief, disappointments or confrontation.
Their high degree of sensitivity and their fear of intimacy leads to masturbation. Their fantasy reaches such intensity it needs an outlet.
This sensitivity in a positive sense will be expressed as a poet, a musician or an artist. This may not be their main occupation but possibly their hobby. Their heightened sensitivity, especially their hearing, can result in “palpitations when listening to music”.
They find it hard to say “no” and may get into sexual situations they cannot control.
They may degenerate into lasciviousness or lustfulness.
These individuals are often highly excitable and can suffer violent out burst of anger, throw things, often over trivial remarks. People only need to disagree with them and they get angry. They will get angry in all sorts of situations (the train is delayed, the coffee m/c doesn’t work c.f CAUST where the anger would be over injustices, in STAPH it is anything. The real anger is not expressed. They are so affected by what others think of them, they feel they will loose out if they engage in discussion. SS DEL wife will run away from him. So going to couples counseling would seem to them to be of no use as they would loose out.
Staphysagria is in the Ranunculaceae Family along with many other common remedies. Aconite, Cimicifuga, Clematis, Helleboris, Hydrastis, Pulsatilla and Ranunculus Bulbosus. All very sensitive to their surroundings, need for an ideal existence. Scholten likens the Family to a child who has been abandoned, feeling frightened and all alone in a big world, in need of protection and support. Sankaran describes the family as easily vexed and excited, with raw nerves and extreme sensitivity. Feeling harassed, shock, with unexplained fears.
So how that translates in Staphysagria: No ability to stand on their own, no strength, wounds do not heal easily, symbolically teeth rot early (they cannot hold their own opinions up to scrutiny). Submissive, easily oppressed by stronger people. Suppressed emotions, anger might be totally absent. Suppressed sexuality may turn to urinary tract infections. (Often referred to as the honeymoon remedy, cystitis after first sex). Skin all kinds of eruptions, no protection.
In children this suppression may lead to mental retardation, intelligent until they go to school and then start to fall behind particularly if crushed by the system. (e.g. left-handed child forced to write right-handed)
A STAPH child may be brought about by seeing parents fighting, they become speechless. Sensitive children.
TEETH break with anger, toothache << cold drinks or air. First teeth go black and decay early. DREAMS teeth falling out.
Swallows continually while talking, especially when excited (swallows her indignation).
Tonsils get swollen and indurated. INDURATIONS EVERYWHERE especially in the sexual organs – ovaries uterus testes. Ovarian pain goes into thighs.
HUNGER even when stomach is full
++ bread (they pick at the loaf on the way home) + stimulants + tobacco + milk < COLD DRINKS > BREAKFAST
NAUSEA especially after operations (another form of abuse). Give after surgery, wherever there is cutting to tissue. So after birth where the perineum is cut (here also give HYPERICUM to mend tissue, if torn (no cut) then just HYPERICUM.
BURNING in urethra when not urinating. BIG remedy for cystitis “PISSED OFF”. Urging as if bladder is not empty.
Sensitivity of the genitals.
Also a remedy after rape – probably the most important remedy but wait until they are in a safe place to be angry
Pelvic congestion – whole area is painful and tender – ENDOMETRIOSIS – CANCER – POLYCYSTIC OVARIES.
< COITION dyspnoea with constriction at end of coition, back pain < coition.
Amorous dreams with emissions. Violent yawning.
HEADACHES > yawning. Compressive, brain feels squeezed.
HEAD LICE. DANDRUFF. Hair falls out. Sensation they have a lump of wood at the back of their heads.
ECZEMA yellow acrid moist oozes from under the crusts.

PULS will become weepy and irritable, STAPH can’t speak, everything is inside and there is trembling, perhaps just in their voice whne they do talk.
LYCOPODIUM is social and expressive, close friends from many areas. STAPH is reserved and selective.
SIL also has a few friends and will not confront but SIL will keep their own opinions.
STAPH is weak and emotional SIL is not emotional.
STAPH ailments come from an emotional source, they don’t have trouble keeping a job because they don’t confront.
